You can take the quarterback out of the NFL, but you can’t take the NFL out of the quarterback.

Tom Bray recently opened up about what he did during Week 1 of his four-game suspension for his role in the Deflategate scandal. Unsurprisingly, the quarterback watched a good amount of football.

“I spent a little time working out and obviously watched a lot of football,” Brady told Jim Gray of Westwood One (via Fox Sports). “I watched that one channel — that Red Zone Channel that captures everything, which is pretty amazing. … You can sit back and watch a lot of the games and how they’re transpiring.”

Brady didn’t have to worry about his own team until they played in the prime time game on “Sunday Night Football.” It’s likely the signal caller liked what he saw.

Jimmy Garappolo took the reins to the offense and helped lead the Patriots to a 23-21 victory over the Cardinals on the road. Garappolo will be under center when the Patriots host the Dolphins, Texans and Bills over the next three weeks.

Garappolo went 24-for-33 for 264 yards and a touchdown in the victory.

Brady, who will return Oct. 23 against the Steelers in Week 5, was in the unfamiliar position of watching Week 1 action rather than playing in it.

“There was a lot of close games yesterday: the two-point conversion in the Raiders-Saints game, the ebbs and flows of that game and the Jacksonville-Green Bay game,” Brady said. “Obviously, I love the sport so much, and to have a chance to watch all those games under difficult circumstances — obviously I’d rather be out there playing — it was still an enjoyable Sunday, nonetheless.”

After a battle with commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL that went through an appeals court and spanned over a year, Brady announced in July that he accepted the suspension.

“I’m very grateful for the overwhelming support I’ve received from Mr. Kraft, the Kraft family, coach Belichick, my coaches and teammates, the NFLPA, my agents, my loving family and most of all, our fans,” Brady wrote on Facebook. “It has been a challenging 18 months and I have made the difficult decision to no longer proceed with the legal process. I’m going to work hard to be the best player I can be for the New England Patriots and I look forward to having the opportunity to return to the field this fall.”
