Tim Duncan welcomes Gregg Popovich’s decision to hire Becky Hammon as an assistant coach

The former San Antonio Silver Stars player became just the second woman ever to join an NBA coaching staff last season when head coach Gregg Popovich made her an assistant coach. Lisa Boyer served as a part-time assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2001-02.

Hammon played 16 seasons in the WNBA, the first eight with the New York Liberty and the last eight with the Silver Stars. She averaged 13.0 points per game during her WNBA career and was an All-WNBA honoree four times – two times as a first-team selection.

She joined the Spurs coaching staff in August of 2014, immediately after her last season as a WNBA player. She had spent the previous season in an informal role with the team during its 2013 training camp.

“I very much look forward to the addition of Becky Hammon to our staff,” said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich in a statement, as reported by the New York Daily News. “Having observed her working with our team this past season, I’m confident her basketball IQ, work ethic and interpersonal skills will be a great benefit to the Spurs.”

The Spurs are in pursuit of free agent LaMarcus Aldridge in an attempt to help the team recapture the championship glory it attained in 2014 when it beat the Miami Heat in five games.

Last season, San Antonio lost in the first round of the playoffs in seven games to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Popovich will turn 67 years old in January. If and when he retires, it’ll be interesting to see if Hammon receives any consideration to replace him.
